Tanzania is an East African country on the shores of the Indian Ocean. It is bordered by Kenya, Mozambique, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia. Tanzania also has offshore islands such as Zanzibar, Mafia and Pemba. The surface area of Tanzania is 365,755 square miles that is 947,300 square kilometers. According to the website Datareportal, the population of Tanzania amounted to 62.39 million in January 2022 with the median age of the population in Tanzania being 18.2. At the beginning of 2022, about 36.6 percent of Tanzania’s population lived in urban centres and 63.4 percent lived in rural areas.
LANGUAGES SPOKEN IN TANZANIA
Tanzania is a multilingual nation with many indigenous languages. The country has more than 100 ethnic communities. They are classified into either Bantu or Nilotes. The Nilotic languages of Tanzania are among all Maasai (also spoken in Kenya), Datooga, Ngasa, Ogiek, Kisankasa, and Pare. The Bantu languages spoken in Tanzania are Bemba, Safwa, Digo, Hehe, Makonde, Nyamwezi, Yao, and Luguru, among others. Swahili and English are the official languages. However, Kiswahili is spoken as the lingua franca by the majority of the population. Kiswahili Swahili or Kiswahili as it is generally called is a Bantu language widely spoken in Africa. This language resulted from the interactions between Arab traders and the Bantu communities of the coastal region of East Africa. Swahili is the lingua franca in East Africa.
